Dr Marc Archer, Director

Marc has led on the formation of the Centre for Mental Health and Wellbeing since arriving at HELP University in 2019. He has a background in social emotional developmental research and has studied the impact of separation from family on child and adolescent development in the US, UK, China and Malaysia. He has also been involved in several projects to increase access to mental health services, particularly among those less likely to seek help. His current work builds on this to adapt, implement and evaluate culture-specific interventions to enhance mental health and wellbeing. marc.archer@help.edu.my


Ms Sue Jen Cheong, MMHA-CMHW Liaison

Executive Director, Malaysian Mental Health Associatio

en joined MMHA as executive Secretary in 2016, entasked with the administration of MMHA. With advocacy as a priority, her passion and determination to shed more light to mental health in our community was further driven through various collaborations in awareness and promotion of mental health especially in the workplaces. In 2019, MMHA further expanded its psychological support services with the establishment of The Mind Hub, and she was honoured to helm MMHA as its executive director. To date, we have a team of 12 associate mental health professionals ranging from psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, counselor and mental health rehab officer, on top of our administrative staff. We support caregivers through our support groups, job placements for people living with chronic, serious mental health issues, and provide hands-on internships for tertiary education students. admin@mmha.org.my


Dr Victor Goh Weng Yew, Workplace Wellbeing Lead

B. Psyc (Hons) (HELP University), PhD (Applied Psychology) (University of Nottingham Malaysia)

Completing his PhD in Applied Psychology, with a particular focus on workplace health and engagement among higher education organizations, Victor is a member of the European Association of Occupational and Health Psychology (EAOHP) and currently leads the Workplace Wellbeing initiative for the Centre for Mental Health and Wellbeing. His research interests are workplace engagement, stress and burnout, and workplace mental health factors. He is contactable at victor.goh@help.edu.my.

Having served in the banking industry for five years before making the switch to clinical psychology, Evone takes leaps and chances in life. She received her Master of Clinical Psychology from HELP University, Malaysia; and her Bachelor degree in Applied Psychology from Coventry University, UK.  She also has a Bachelor degree in Finance and Economics from QUT, Australia.

Throughout her training and career as a Clinical Psychologist, Evone has practiced in both government hospitals and private clinics, providing psychological services for clients facing family and relationship issues; and those with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety. She has also provided workshops and trainings for companies from various industries such as consulting, banking, IT, education, and embassy.

Currently, Evone is a Senior Lecturer and the Programme Chair for the Master of Clinical Psychology at HELP University.  She is also pursuing her Ph.D at University Malaya.  Her area of interest in psychotherapy revolves around grief, trauma, and loss, as well as dealing with various mental health issues at workplace.

Prof ( Adj) Dato’ Dr Andrew Mohanraj Chandrasekaran, Co-chair of CMHW Board

Dr Andrew Mohanraj served the Ministry of Health Malaysia for 12 years before taking up an international assignment after the Asian Tsunami of 2004. As a Consultant Psychiatrist and Mental Health Development Adviser he has done pioneering work in the establishment of sustainable psychosocial rehabilitation services in Indonesia (post disaster, post conflict) , The Philippines(post disaster) and Timor Leste (post conflict).

In 2012, Dr. Andrew Mohanraj returned to Malaysia under the Return of the Expert Programme by Talent Corporation, a unit under the purview of the Prime Minister’s Department. He subsequently joined Perdana University Graduate School of Medicine (in collaboration with Johns Hopkins Medical School , Baltimore) as Associate Professor in Psychiatry and its first Director of Clinical Clerkship.

He continues his consultancy work for local and international government and non-government organizations , Dr Mohanraj also served two terms as a member of the Mental Health Promotion Advisory Council to the Minister of Health Malaysia. In 2013, in recognition of Dr. Andrew Mohanraj’s international work in the promotion of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), he was appointed by the then Minister for Community Development as a member of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, in which he served two terms consecutively.

Besides running his psychiatric practice in Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, he is now engaged in a short term consultancy to provide mental health services to refugees and asylum seekers whose intended destination is Australia. He is also actively involved in the mainstreaming of mental health issues in Malaysia as the President of the Malaysian Mental Health Association (MMHA). He has played a key role in the formation of the Centre for Mental Health and Wellbeing (CMHW) – a collaboration between HELP University and MMHA – for which he serves as co-chair of the board of governors.

He was recently elected as a member of the Board of Directors of the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH). He has also taken up an academic position as Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at Taylor’s University Medical School , Malaysia . As an animal lover and an advocate for animal rights , he has recently taken up the challenge of assuming the post of President of the recently registered Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Malaysia.

Dr. Gerard has been involved in the field of education, counseling and training for over 30 years.
Many of those years were spent in educational leadership in mission, private and international
schools in Malaysia. He is a former Principal of one of the Lasallian schools in Kuala Lumpur. He
has been with the HELP Education Group for the last 20 years and was the founding Principal of
HELP International School, Kuala Lumpur.

Gerard is a Counseling Psychologist and has extensive experience in the training, supervision
and development of both professional and pre-service counselors.
He holds different portfolios in the HELP Education Group. He is currently the CEO of HELP
Education Services, a subsidiary of the HELP International Corporation that oversees the K-12
International Schools in Kuala Lumpur, Johor Baru and Kuching.

Professor Ricardo Araya

Director of the Centre for Global Mental Health LSHTM and IoPPN

Ricardo is Lead of the Global Mental Health Research Group and a Director of the Centre for Global Mental Health, which is based in the Health Service and Population Research Department at the IoPPN. Prior to joining King’s College London, Ricardo was a Professor of Global Mental Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and co-Director of the Centre for Global Mental Health, a joint venture between the LSHTM and Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Neuroscience (King’s College London) which he helped foster.

Prof Ricardo Araya’s field of expertise is in the development and implementation of simple and affordable interventions to treat mental disorders, particularly in resource-poor settings. He has previously developed a model of care to treat common mental disorders, which has been adapted and used in several middle and low-income countries. He has a leading role in a number of major initiatives to increase mental research capacity in Latin America, and strong collaborative links with a wide range of research partners in Africa.

Professor Therese Hesketh

MBChB, DCH, MRCPCH, MPH, MFPH, PhD,
Professor of Global Health at UCL and Director of the Centre of Global Health at Zhejiang University

Therese trained in pediatrics and public health in the UK. Has worked as a clinician and educator in several countries, including China, Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Laos, Cambodia, Tanzania, and Uganda. She has worked for UNICEF, the WHO and international NGOs. In recent years her focus has been on research in China, where she has specialised in conducting large epidemiological studies, and interventions across a range of population health topics.

Her ongoing research in China includes the knowledge and understanding of ageing and dementia, the ethnography of caring for family members with dementia, measurement of mental health outcomes in adolescents, and prevalence and risk factors for intimate partner violence. Recently she has started a health research collaboration focusing on child survival in Mali.
